Interdisciplinary Biologist/Physical Scientist (Data Scientist)

The major duties of the Interdisciplinary Biologist/Physical Scientist (Data Scientist) position include, but are not limited to the following -Overseeing IMD-wide efforts to manage and disseminate high-quality scientific information for use in scientific investigations and park resource management decision support; -Developing scopes of work, technical criteria, and means by which to achieve data management goals through the development of applications, scripts, templates, or other tools. Monitors and adjusts projects through their lifecycle to ensure that projects achieve desired goals within time and budgetary expectations; -Writing reports, briefings, scientific articles, presentations, or other communications products to convey information about NPS Inventory & Monitoring science and data management practices to a variety of audiences; -Ensuring that data collected by IMD are published following FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable). Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements for one of the following series by close of the announcement:
For the General Natural Resources Management and Biological Sciences 0401 Series:
A.Degree:
biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. -OR- B. Combination of education and
Experience:
Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. For the General Physical Science 1301 Series:
A. Degree:
physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. -OR- B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. - AND - Minimum
Qualifications:
To qualify for this position at the GS-13 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Experience at this level must include all of the following:
(1) Preparing natural resource inventory or monitoring data for use in scientific analysis and reporting. (2) Experience in the use of R, python, or other programming language to evaluate and report the status and trends of natural resource inventory or monitoring data. (3) Experience leading teams or projects to design and build databases to support the collection, entry, and quality assurance of natural resource inventory or monitoring data. Experience:
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
